8th Century standing cross

Ahenny North Stone Cross

2 1/4" x 1 1/32" - 57 x 26 mm

Ahenny, County Tipperary, Ireland

This jewelry design is based on a cross carved in stone in the middle of the 8th century (about 750 A.D.), an example of a processional cross translated from wood and metal into stone.  Many of the original processional crosses were made of wood, so to protect them from the rain, a roof or a bell, as in this case, was added.
