Arth Var
1996, Bronze on Marble
18-1/4" x 9-1/2" x 14-1/2"
Edition of 10 (2-10 available)
Truly a creature that inspires legend, the brown or grizzly bear, ursus arctos, can reach a standing height of 9 to 10 feet, a weight of 1500 pounds, and have claws as long as a large man's fingers. He has been feared and revered wherever he has roamed, because of his size and exceptional intelligence.
In some groups of people, the animal was held with such awe that to speak his name was forbidden. He was simply called "the brown one." He was a being of immense strength, capable of strange and wonderful wanderings and, in the time when men and animals talked with each other, a source of mysterious and frightening knowledge. Such an animal took on cosmic proportions.
Arth Var is this cosmic bear. This is the legendary bear who for a thousand generations fought Draco, the dragon in the sky, for domination of the North Star (an actual astronomical event that lasted about 23,000 years) and will spend a thousand generations chasing the dragon away.
Arth Var begins the chase, and this bronze bear sculpture tries to capture the mystery of this magnificent animal.
