Stuttgarter Krieger
1999 - Edition of 10
12" x 18 " x 10 1/4"
Bronze on marble
Outside of Stuttgart, Germany, there is a mountain. It is a special mountain because it is made from the rubble of the city caused by the bombings during World War II. It is covered by a blanket of green grass and trees. I drove this mountain often.
I was stationed near Stuttgart in the early 1960's, less than 20 years after World War II, and saw Stuttgart as a dynamic city - clean, growing, and optimistic. I was impressed with the attitude of a people who could do such rebuilding with an eye to the future. It is still a dynamic optimistic city.
Stuttgart was founded on the site of a 950 A. D. Stud Farm, so using a horse seemed historically accurate and poignant. The horse is getting up - with determination and spirit - and will not quit until he is up.
This piece is my salute to the spirit of all people who come out of disaster and rebuild their lives and dream new dreams.
